This tool creates placeholder text — the familiar "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" filler that designers and developers drop into mockups, templates and layouts. Why use placeholder text
When you are building a page, real copy is often not ready yet — or it would distract from the layout itself. Placeholder text solves both problems:
- It fills a design with realistic-looking content so you can judge spacing, line length and hierarchy.
- Because it is meaningless, nobody starts reading and commenting on the wording instead of the design.
- It has a natural distribution of word and sentence lengths, so text blocks look the way real content will.
Where Lorem Ipsum comes from
Lorem Ipsum is not random gibberish. It is based on a passage from De finibus bonorum et malorum, a work on ethics written by the Roman statesman Cicero in 45 BC. The text was scrambled in the 1500s by an unknown printer to make a type specimen book, and it has been the standard placeholder text of the printing and design industries ever since. The opening line, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit", is the most recognisable fragment.
