How does an SMS QR code work?

The code carries an SMSTO: payload — number and optional text — that camera apps on iOS and Android translate into a pre-filled message. Unlike app-specific links, SMS works on every phone with a SIM card, with no account and no data plan needed.

Phone number format: always international

Use the international format with country code (+49 30 1234567 for Germany) so the code works for travellers and foreign SIM cards too. Spaces, dashes and brackets are stripped automatically — they're just for your readability while typing.

How to create the code

  1. Enter the recipient number in international format (+49 …).
  2. Optionally add the message text — e.g. a keyword like “START”.
  3. Download the code and place it where people should text you from.
